Fanouropita Vegan Spiced Cake

Try this fooodlove Fanouropita recipe, a cake made for Saint Fanourios, Patron of Lost Things. This spiced Lenten cake is light, healthier, and vegan too.

what you'll need
  • 450 g self-raising flour
  • 300 g sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground cloves
  • 240 ml fresh orange juice
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 120 ml olive oil
  • 120 ml seed oil
  • 120 ml dessert wine (mavrodaphne)

In a large bowl add the flour, sugar, cinnamon and ground cloves, and whisk them until combined.

Mix the baking soda with the fresh orange juice in a small jug and stir them for a few seconds. Once the starts fizzing, pour it to the mixture.

Continue by adding the oil and the red wine and mix them until combined.

Using a brush, oil up a cake pan (or baking dish) and pour in the batter.

Sprinkle a hearty amount of sesame at the top and bake in a pre-heated oven at 170ºC (340ºF) for 50 minutes.
